Hello! We are Craig and Jo Hammond, we run this historic Butcher’s Shop in the quaint village of Matfield on the outskirts of Kent. Living on site with our four children Phoebe, Finlay, Reuben and Pippa, we like to offer a very personal service and are passionate about the quality, provenance and welfare of the meat that we sell in our shop.
Built around 1860 as a purpose-built Butchers (evidence of which exists in the old ‘removeable’ windows at the front of the shop from which customers would be served through between hanging carcasses – before the days of refrigeration!) the shop has seen a few different owners in it’s time, but has always remained a village butchers.
Nowadays, our small team of knowledgeable, friendly butchers not only serve quality meat but also other grocery essentials and store cupboard staples. From local fresh milk, artisan breads and fresh vegetables through to locally made ice cream, coffee and condiments! A far cry from the 1860’s shop displays!
We have a strong emphasis on animal welfare and provenance and feel it is important that our customers can be kept informed of where their meat is from, how it has been raised and who has raised it. We work closely with our suppliers and farms to ensure that we can consistently deliver this ideology. Quality is obviously key, but we have found that good quality meat has a direct correlation with positive animal husbandry, high welfare standards and nutritious feed/grazing.
